Positive Energetics Foundation (PEF) is picking up momentum with their program providing free organic produce once a week for WIC participants (low income women with infants or children) in Wahiawa, Oahu. Drew Wilkinson got the program started with a “Sow it Forward” mini-grant from Kitchen Gardeners International, from there PEF established a garden plot on their farm specifically to grow WIC produce.
The program is growing and so is the interest of starting a garden onsite at the WIC office, which just got the “Ok” from the state. The WIC staff is excited to learn how to “grow their own” and will be teaming up with PEF to raise funds to get materials for the future WIC Garden.
On August 30th, we will have a big workday, get the garden in the ground, and be the first WIC office to provide participants with organic produce grown onsite. We are going to open this up to the permablitz crew as a community action blitz, space is limited to the first 10 participants who rsvp to this call.
RSVP to firstname.lastname@example.org by 08/23/13 to reserve your spot!
Hopefully this will set a new standard for WIC offices throughout the state. Additionally, in September, PEF will hold a container gardening workshop and provide WIC participants the knowledge and materials to start their own gardens.
